SDNY EXCLUSIVE, March 6 – After the president of Honduras' brother Tony Hernandez was convicted of drug trafficking and sentenced to life plus thirty years, on April 21, 2022 the ex-president himself, Juan Orlando Hernandez, was extradited to the United States.

On March 6, the end of JOH's cross, then closing arguments live tweeted by Inner City Press here, ending this way before deliberations:
JOH's lawyer Stabile: They want you to think he's just a drug dealer trying to trick the US. But why go to so much effort? Previous presidents didn't... Why not just stay home and count your drug money. Please do not hold JOH responsible for anything Tony may have done
JOH's lawyer: No one can tell you how to vote in this verdict, or in an election. You don't have to accept everything that the US says. We ask you for not guilty on all counts. Thank you.
Judge Castel: Rebuttal?
AUSA Tarlow: Their arguments make no sense. They claim JOH tried to fight drug trafficking. He was the president - do you think he is going to say he is in favor of drug trafficking? He needed to make it seem he was trying AUSA: It doesn't matter he did a few things - you saw the drug ledgers, you heard that he said he wanted to shove the drugs right up the noses of the gringos, the Americans. Witnesses told you no drugs were seized in Honduras.
AUSA: JOH wasn't tough on crime - he was tough on his enemies. He protected his cousin, Pineda, and his brother Tony. The requests to extradite Tigre Bonilla and Mario Calix where made in 2018 and 2019 and still pending when he left office in 2022.
AUSA: Jose Sanchez took that stand and told you that he was an accountant in Honduras, that he left after he witnessed JOH and Geovanny Fuentes Ramirez. He was there to exchange dollars for lempiras. Why would he make up such a small role for himself? AUSA: Do you think Fabio Lobo wanted to implicate his father? No. If they lie, they lose everything.... Defense counsel said that JOH would not refer to Juan Orlando Hernandez in this case - but they says don't believe the ledgers.
AUSA: The standard is not no doubt - it's beyond a reasonable doubt. For years he exploited the political system for drug trafficking. He used the military and police and his own power. It is time for you to return a verdict of guilty. Thank you.

Gracias.
Juez Castel: ¿Refutación?
AUSA Tarlow: Sus argumentos no tienen sentido.
Gracias.
