SDNY COURTHOUSE, April 21 – When jury selection was completed for the retrial of accused CIA Vault 7 leaker Joshua Schulte, U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York Judge Jesse M. Furman told the jurors, Do not read or say anything about the case. Inner City Press was there.

On March 31, 2023 Judge Furman docketed this: "The conference is hereby ADJOURNED to Friday, April 21, 2023, at 11 a.m. To enable the Court to hold a Faretta hearing that day - if the Defendant persists in his request to proceed pro se - the Government is ORDERED to file a proposed Faretta script."
Inner City Press went on April 21 to the more than an hour proceeding. Judge Furman said the record is closed on a pending motion, Schulte having missed his deadline to reply. Schulte said he had no access to paper, stamps, a pen or even pencil in the MDC. His now stand-by counsel said the issue didn't come up with he visited.
On images found on the laptop Schulte used to be able to use in the MDC, Schulte insisted them were only thumbnails - while the AUSA said he himself had clicked and opened / enlarged them. Is that legal? The issue is the subject of a special order in the civil Epstein case(s) before SDNY Judge Jed S. Rakoff.
Judge Furman determined that Schulte can represent himself, but added this will be for all aspects, no hybrid. Schulte said there is no basis to require the same position on representation in all cases, for example one in EDNY. When asked if he understood his Sixth Amendment right to self-representation, Schulte replied it is not in the Sixth Amendment. It is an application of the Sixth Amendment, he was told.
Schulte said, I designed malware for the CIA, when asked in the Faretta script about his employment history. And that seems to be the basis for charging him with copyright violation. Inner City Press will stay on the case(s) - including the lack of pen and stamps. Watch this site.
