SDNY COURTROOM, Feb 2 – The criminal case against a couple charged with trying to support ISIS and attack cadets at West Point has run into a dispute among Criminal Justice Act lawyers and a lengthy sealed proceeding on August 31. Further proceeding were held on September 1 and then on November 5 (Vlog 1 and 2, podcast here)
Arwa Muthana married James Bradley and the Department of Justice says they tried to go join ISIS, on a ship from Newark, after speaking to an undercover law enforcement officer about today "taking out" cadets at West Point with a vehicle. DOJ's Complaint is online here.
On February 2, 2023 after he pled guilty, James Bradley was up for sentencing. The US wanted 15 years and Bradley's lawyers wanted time served: 23 months.
Judge Paul A. Engelmayer heard argument for an hour and half, then took a break to think. It was nearly 12:30 when he restarted, for an hour sentencing. He read letters from Bradley's family members, but also his Boy Scouts master and martial arts instructor.
As in the Tekashia 6ix9ine case sentencing(s), Judge Engelmayer took time off for youth and first offender status. This time he added the two days for one COVID prison time calculator. He arrived at a sentencing of 11 years, which minus the 23 months is nine years, one month. Bradley's mother cried, and Judge Engelmayer apologized, saying it's the nature of the crime.
Next up is Bradley's wife Muthana. More below
